Prof Pillay obtained his BSc(Eng), MSc(Eng) and PhD (Eng) at the University of Natal, completing his PhD in 1992. He then joined the university as a Senior Research Follow in the Pollution Research Group, mainly focusing on membrane technology projects. In 1996 Lingam accepted a position at the (now) Durban University of Technology, to initiate research in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Lingam moved to the Dept of Process Engineering, Stellenbosch University in 2013.
His primary research interest is on innovative and membrane technologies for decentralized potable water provision, sanitation, and water reuse, with a strong focus on developing economies. He was the project leader on numerous contract research projects, has graduated numerous postgraduate students, has produced various journal publications in the field, and is an inventor on various membrane related patents. One of the major technological outputs of his team, viz. Woven Fabric Microfiltration, is currently being commercialized.
